A Young Couple Assesses Their Heavy And Abusive Drinking And Their Short And Long Range Dreams, Hopes, And Aspirations
Linda and Frank have been dating one another for four years. They met while enrolled in the same human geography class at a small, country, private liberal arts college located in the Midwestern part of the United States. While they were basically good buddies at first, they eventually began dating when they were in their second year of college.
Since both of them came from very "old school" backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first began dating. As the time progressed, then again, they began to go to more keg parties, football bashes, happy hours, and sorority and fraternity parties. As a consequence, they gradually began to drink increasingly more the longer they dated.
After they graduated, they both found jobs in a large city that was located around ninety-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they at long last decided to move in with one another.
With any big change in a person's life there is typically something that triggers the specific change in question. For Frank and Linda the notion of having children and buying a new house was this "change agent." In brief, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank began to critically review their drinking behavior and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their health. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their excessive and hazardous drinking.
Would their heavy drinking unfavorably affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending so much money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?
From a different slant on things, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a "driving under the influence" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their hazardous and abusive drinking was becoming a reality that they could not ignore any longer. All of these questions clearly resulted in the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to discover that they couldn't continue their hazardous and abusive drinking if their hopes, aspirations, and dreams were to be realized.
Once they got to this conclusion, they informed their drinking friends about their their goal of buying or building a new house, about their plans to start a family, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this time forward so that they could start to realize their future goals, dreams, and aspirations.
Much to their disbelief, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reevaluating their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently centered around drinking. They also understood that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more adult-like and exhibit more concern for their aspirations, their health, and for their careers in the next five or ten years.
After opening up to their buddies about their goals, aspirations, and dreams, Frank and Linda actually started to have more significant relationships with all of their pals. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar attitude regarding their excessive drinking and their short and long-term plans, aspirations, and goals.
