A Woman Displays Symptoms Of Depression And Alcohol Dependency And Schedules An Appointment To See Her Healthcare Professional
Cindy was a forty-one-year-old loan officer who knew that she had some drinking issues. For example, within the past five months she has felt the need to have more than a few drinks before going to work, three weeks ago she tested positive for a breathalyzer test where she works, two weeks ago she got arrested by the state highway patrol for a DWI, and last but not least, for around five months she has started to fail to remember what she does and says when she drinks with her buddies.
Not unlike multitudes of other individuals, Cindy's involvement with alcohol started out gradually and continued at this tempo for quite a long time because from time to time she engaged in sporadic social drinking. In point of fact, for almost two years, every time she went out with her pals to drink, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her drinking circumstances, nevertheless, seemed to completely change when she divorced her husband.
Cindy got especially despondent about the loss of her husband, and as a way to stop fixating on her depressing emotions she came to the conclusion that she would begin palling around more routinely with some of her friends who love to "get down" and drink. It didn't take long, nevertheless, before her drinking increased significantly the more routinely she went to and drank at family get-togethers, sporting events, happy hours, dinner dates, and private parties with her pals.
To put it briefly, she was drinking and having a ton of fun just like everybody else in her group of friends without too much deliberation regarding the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been exhibiting. Yet someplace in her mind she realized the facts about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the mind and that she most probably required alcohol treatment but kept away from the thought as much as possible.
One afternoon during her six-month physical exam, her physician asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to tell falsehoods to her healthcare professional, Cindy disclosed the truth that she frequently drinks more than she should. If truth be told, she stated that she routinely drinks in a hazardous and excessive manner. Then Cindy informed her physician about her depression. More plainly, she articulated that broken relationships often set off a dismal progression of events typified by increased drinking which further resulted in more disheartening feelings that, in turn, resulted in even more drinking. And this is specifically what happened when her husband and she got divorced four years ago.
Cindy's healthcare practitioner then articulated the following: "I am not trying to make an impulsive diagnosis, but with your medical condition we may be confronting two separate concerns. As a result, I think we should make an appointment for you to get an alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse assessment from my partner, Dr. Brill, who is a drug and alcohol addiction specialist."
"Whether your drinking condition is more correlated with alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse is not clear, but I believe that further exploration is defensible. Then I believe we should make an appointment for you to get a psychological evaluation from another one of my partners, Dr. Patterson, ."
"I want to get some more information about your sadness and see how much your depression and drinking are correlated." Cindy showed her approval of her healthcare practitioner's treatment approach and thanked him for his assistance and concern.
