A High School Student Drinks Excessively With His Cronies, Suffers From An Alcohol Overdose, And Finds Out That Learning Something In Class Can Make A Difference

Andy was a high school ninth grader who regularly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and commonly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing to have fun. The main problem with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a consequence able from a legal perspective to drive a truck or car and to ingest alcohol.

Andy, on the other hand, had a tough time realizing the fact that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking. In fact, then again, Andy frequently drank with his guy friends after school, largely on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older buddies. One of his friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his cronies went to a recreational area and drank for approximately two or three hours.

After drinking something like six glasses of wine, Andy started to feel queasy and then vomited. When he passed out on the tennis court, one of his cronies called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his guy friends went to the hospital to see Andy, they were informed that Andy had been showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was in point of fact flabbergasted to realize that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had roughly five or ten drinks. When he articulated this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, however, the physician notified Andy that drinking five or ten alcoholic beverages over a two or three hour period of time could certainly be quite a bit more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The healthcare practitioner further verbalized how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's breathing and that when this occurs, a person can perish.

This was the first cautionary message to Andy that he was drinking in a dangerous way and that there are repercussions for such behavior. The physician told Andy that he was a fortunate person because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.

The doctor also spoke to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol therapy for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was all right and notified the doctor that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol rehabilitation.

While speaking to his parents, Andy told them that there must be a solid reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week in Mr. Johnson's health class.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Due to the fact that he almost died, however, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not showing more attention to a subject that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
