A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Pupils About The Important Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the best known parochial high school in the district. Even though she had been teaching for only one year, she had already gained a reputation as a person with instructional methods that inspired and motivated the students in her class to learn and to think.
For instance, one Friday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed her students and said the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about some of the most familiar signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed viewpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt prove that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the more likely it is that she or he is a person who is alcohol dependent."
Miss Jackson then informed the the students that each student would be responsible for researching three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members via a thirty minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to study the list and rank the top eight alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After around five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the pupils in her class that after she evaluates the results, she will discuss her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to look over the information she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 20 or 30 seconds, virtually everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was noticeable that the pupils had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, virtually every individual in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, that is, "Do you feel unusually nauseous when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her students why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcoholism. She pointed out the fact that the essential difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
Essentially this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol abruptly quits drinking, he or she will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the students started to understand the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the enthusiasm displayed by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had encouraged and inspired her students to stop and think about an important social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
